Tired of seeing so maybe great athletes in the city of Toronto training by themselves, the idea of this group was born from the idea that there should be an organized group with the sole purpose of cultivating and developing this great talent. I’ve personally seen how rewarding training in a group can be, and I also know how many talented athletes are forced out of the sport due to lack of many things – resources, support, funding etc. My goal with this program is to establish an Elite Level endurance group in the city of Toronto where post collegiate individuals from around the GTA and then country can come together and continue to train at the highest level with the hopes of furthering their development in the sport and hopefully one day making a national team, world championship team and even an Olympic team.
A native of Oshawa, Canada, Matt Hughes started his run as the greatest Steeplechaser in Canadian history in 2007 when he qualified for the Junior Pan-Am Championships in the event. After winning 2 consecutive NCAA Championships at the University of Louisville, Hughes established himself as one of the best steeplechasers in the world, showing amazing consistency in his performances each year. Matt set a Canadian record at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Moscow, made the Canadian Olympic team in 2016, finished 6th at the World Championships in 2017, and was 4th at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. Hughes trained as a member of the world renowned Nike Bowerman Track Club from 2016 to 2019 before returning to Toronto to focus on the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Off the track, Matt is a die-hard Toronto sports fan, coffee lover, and world class eater.
